About the Book:

Too much Temptation

When Lily Wellstone heads to the Bitterward Estate to comfort her widowed friend Eugenia, she certainly does not have romance in mind. In fact the playful but levelheaded Lily is amused to no end when, en route, a gypsy gifts her with a beautiful medallion, claiming it will ensnare the romantic desires of a stranger.

But fate has other plans in the form of Eugenia's ruggedly handsome brother, the Duke of Mountjoy. One day at Bitterward and Lily can't deny the sizzling attraction between her and the roguish duke. Nothing can come of it, of course. She's not looking for entanglements and he's practically engaged. But whether it's her outgoing nature and the duke's outlandish ways sparking off one another, or the mysterious Gypsy medallion working "magic," hearts are stirring in the most unexpected and wicked ways...

1)
What kind of research did you have to do to bring this story to life on the page?

I have a base set of reference material I use for my historical novels relating to history, furniture, architecture, culture etc. I find Google Books to be an invaluable resource. I can now, within seconds, determine with a fairly high degree of certainty whether a given word or phrase was in use (and how it was used) in my time period, to give just one example. I’m constantly supplementing my physical reference library, as well as creating a digital one.

A couple of years ago I acquired a book from 1815 titled The New Family Reciept Book which contains advice, recipes and instructions for all things domestic and household related. From this book, I learned about, and used one way or another in Not Wicked Enough, coffee made from acorns, a better method of stuffing a goose, and phosphorus pencils.

I’ve also found academic articles, though much harder to get my hands on, tend to have fascinating and well-documented information about not only about life and culture in a given time period, but also different ways of looking at the meaning of those things. It’s a great, great pity that so much of this meticulous work is locked behind paywalls.

2) Not Wicked Enough is a great title! Who came up with it? Was it the original title or did it change along the way?

I am so proud of myself! Not Wicked Enough was my original title. I also came up with the title for the following book, Not Proper Enough. I wish I could say I rock all my titles like that, but I don’t. Sometimes my title ideas are completely lame. Usually when I have a title success, it’s the one I used from the very start.

3) Do you listen to music while you write? If yes, what do you like to listen to?

Yes! And, no! Also, it depends!

Sometimes I need music to keep me from getting distracted by -- oh shiny!! Or to get me into the right emotional state for what I’m writing. Sometimes music distracts me and I can’t have it on.

What I listen to depends on what I’m writing and what new-to-me musician or band I’ve fallen in love with. Most recently, The Black Keys album Camino Real is awesome, every song is on one of my playlists. The same is true of the Civil Wars album Barton Hollow. You might notice that those two bands are in no way similar. But I love them both. I’ll sometimes put a song on repeat and listen to it upwards of a 100 times (or more) during the course of a project. Often I’ll just put my top 25 played on and get all my super-duper favorites on tap.

4) What do you do in your spare time when you're not writing?

Spare time? What is this “spare time” of which you speak?

5) What's up next for you?

Not Proper Enough is the book after Not Wicked Enough, so look for that from Berkley Sensation in September 2012.

Sometime in the first half of 2012 I’ll have a story in a self-published historical anthology I’m doing with NYT best-selling authors Courtney Milan and Sherry Thomas. I’m awaiting the final round of edits for a novella in my My Immortals paranormal series. That story will also be self-published, I would imagine, by the end of February 2012. As for novels, I’ll shortly be starting on the next book in the My Immortals series. That story (for fans of the series) will feature Harsh Marit, the super-hot half-demon, half-mage.

  1. February 7th can't come soon enough!! I looked at Walmart today, many times they have books out the Friday before release day. Much to my dismay...no such luck...SO, I'll be opening it up at midnight(ish) on my Kindle! :oD

  2. Hi, Carolyn! I was very intrigued to read about you and the synopsis of "Not Wicked Enough" which sounds utterly delicious! I love a story with a gypsy thrown in as it reinforces the idea that anything can happen. I really look forward to reading about Lily and the Duke who is "practically engaged" but he's not there yet so that makes him fair game! Scrumptious!

I would love to read that 1815 book you were lucky enough to find. I'll bet it is chock full of tidbits that would make for fascinating reading. I love that kind of thing.

I've added your new book to my Wish List and anticipate reading even more of your upcoming novels. Thanks for sharing the synopsis and more about yourself. All the best!

The Q&A on this post was excellent. Especially loved your answer to #4. Brought a giggle. I also like that this will be a series. It's always a treat when you can reconnect with characters. Thank you for taking the time to do this interview and offer the contest. I have recently been finding alot of new to me authors that have grabbed my attention. This book just went on my wishlist. I love the fact I found you at the beginning of the series so I can follow as you write :)
